From today's New York Times:
Barbara Brenner, who has had breast cancer and is executive director of the advocacy group Breast Cancer Action, said, "There's a real problem," and added, "We finally tell people at the end of the day: 'You're going to get a lot of information. Trust your gut. Nobody has the answers.' "
"I'm really glad I was diagnosed 13 years ago," Ms. Brenner said, "when there were fewer choices."
I hope she was quoted out of context, because the idea of someone with this kind of victim mentality running a breast cancer advocacy group makes me crazy. I had breast cancer in 2005, and I have daily gratitude that I got it when I did and not years earlier -- when the survival rate was lower, when treatments had many more side effects and lifetime health implications. She can't really believe the old days were better because we knew less, could she?

hear hear! my mom had breast cancer back in the late 80s, and it was no picnic, i assure you. especially compared with the experience that a friend of mine is having now - lumpectomies, super short chemo cycles - who wouldn't want better options like that?
